What are Rahu and Ketu? Moon’s nodes, namely Rahu (Ascending node or the Dragon’s Head) and Ketu (Descending node or the Dragon’s Tail) as called by Indian Astrologers seem to have a drastic effect on our lives
As the Earth travels counterclockwise round the Sun, so the Moon travels in the same direction around the Earth. The Moon crosses the plane of the ecliptic twice in its orbit, once as it travels northward away from the Sun and once as it travels southward towards the Sun. These points mark the placing of the North and South nodes. Although they can be interpreted astrologically as the Ascendant and Descendant, they are not physical elements of the solar system.
Astrologers have noted that these two points affect our lives to a great extent, and therefore they are marked in horoscopes. These points shift westward along the ecliptic in
a retrograde cycle, lasting 18 years.
Nodes are always in opposition to each other, so whatever the position of Rahu, the North node, Ketu, the South node is exactly opposite. For example if Rahu is 10 degrees in Aries, Ketu must be 10 degrees Libra, i.e. apart by 180 degrees.
The horoscope is a chart that shows how the planets are moving in relation to the 12 houses named Rasis in the zodiac as seen from the Earth. To astrologers Sun is also considered a planet Rahu and Ketu being imaginary planets. At times some planets can be seen very close to each other. Such a situation is called a conjunction. As Mercury and Venus are revolving closer round the Sun they are often found in conjunction with the Sun. Those who are born during such a time have this conjunction in their horoscopes. Some conjunctions as the above cause beneficial effects to the owner while some others are malefic.
Rahu and Ketu are moving backwards as mentioned earlier. As we look at planets from the Earth there are times that some planets seem to hesitate, stop and then move backwards for a time before resuming their forward motion. A planet that seems to move backwards in this way is in retrograde motion, and the optical illusion is the result of the Earth overtaking the planet in question while both are moving forward.
As Rahu and Ketu are in opposite Rasis in a horoscope, there are times that all the planets
move only on one side of these nodes. When this is seen in a horoscope it is known as “Kala Sarpa Yoga” (joining of black snakes), which is said to cause malefic effects on the owner. Of course I have noted that persons having such horoscopes reaching high positions in which case they end up with a shorter life span.
The malefic points that are allocated to different houses and planets are as shown.
Mars-malefic points - 4
Saturn - 3
Sun - 2
Rahu - 1
If the planet is positioned beneficially the malefic effect is less. The malefic points of the female should be less than that of the male. The points are also calculated considering Moon’s Rasi as the 1st house (Chandra Lagna), and and taking Venus’ Rasi as the 1st house and totaled up.
The horoscopes of Madam Sonia Gandi and Prime Minister Sanjay Gandi are shown below.
When the malefic points were calculated in the above, the female horoscope had 32.5, while the male had only 21.75. (sorry the space in the paper does not permit the calculation to be shown) In this case the difference exceeds 10 and the Dosha points are higher in the female. This shows that this male cannot live long in the marriage life, with this particular female.
